Williams was let go from the Giants' practice squad Wednesday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports. Williams will return to the open market after rejoining the Giants' practice squad in late September. The running back could return to New York's practice unit if he doesn't get another opportunity elsewhere down the line.

The Giants signed Williams to the practice squad Thursday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports. Williams was active for each of New York's past two games in a special-teams capacity, and he showed enough to earn a spot on the practice squad. The 24-year-old will operate in an emergency reserve role going forward.

Williams was waived by the Giants on Tuesday, Dan Salomone of the team's official site reports. Williams was active each of the last two games for the Giants, however he mostly contributed on special teams and received no touches on offense. The 24-year old will now work to earn another opportunity in the NFL.

Williams rushed five times for 26 yards and caught all seven of his targets for 46 yards in a 25-22 preseason win over the Bengals on Sunday. UDFA Jashaun Corbin led the Giants with nine carries in the contest, but Williams tallied only one fewer rushing yard on four fewer carries. The latter was also very active as a pass catcher, finishing second on the team with seven receptions and third with 46 receiving yards. Williams impressed in the team's first exhibition contest against New England last Thursday, rushing nine times for 61 yards and a touchdown, though Corbin was the more prolific receiver in that game. The two (along with Gary Brightwell, who didn't play Sunday due to an undisclosed injury) are battling for the role of No. 3 RB behind Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida (undisclosed), and Williams appears to have the inside track for the spot thus far, per Dan Duggan of The Athletic.

Williams rushed nine times for 61 yards and a touchdown and added one catch on one target for minus-1 yard in a 23-21 preseason victory versus the Patriots on Thursday. Williams suffered a minor knee injury early in camp but was able to play in the exhibition opener and looked explosive, ripping off separate runs of 17 and 19 yards. He capped a nine-play scoring drive in the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown run up the middle. Williams is vying for a spot on the 53-man roster as the third-string running back behind Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida (undisclosed).
