Amendola opted to retire rather than return for his 14th NFL season Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Amendola received interest in free agency from multiple teams this offseason after recording 24 catches for 248 yards and three touchdowns with Houston in 2021, according to Schefter. However, the two-time Super Bowl champ with New England apparently is at peace with the course of his career, saying, "it was better than I could have ever imagined." Amendola accumulated 24 touchdowns and 6,212 receiving yards on 617 career catches over 13 seasons spent playing between the Rams, Patriots, Dolphins, Lions and Texans.

Amendola recorded seven receptions on eight targets for 113 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 28-25 loss to the Titans. Amendola was a substantial part of the offense thanks to the absence of Chris Conley (knee) and early exit of Brandin Cooks (knee). He took advantage of his opportunity and showed immediate rapport with Davis Mills, keying the Texans' comeback efforts. Amendola found the end zone from seven and 26 yards away while also racking up big gains of 37 and 21 yards. The end result was his first game with over 100 yards since the 2019 season. Looking ahead, Amendola is set to hit free agency and could sign another short-term deal to serve as a depth receiver with the Texans or a new team.

Houston activated Amendola (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday. Amendola landed on the list last week and is now back on the active roster after missing one game. Before going on the list, Amendola had missed the prior four games with a knee injury, but he should be back on the field for Sunday's season finale versus the Titans.

Amendola (undisclosed) has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Until Amendola clears COVID protocols, Brandin Cooks, Nico Collins and Chris Conley (knee) are in line to serve as Houston's top available wide receivers. Amendola, who had been dealing with a knee issue and recently was activated off IR, last suited up Week 12.

Amendola (knee) doesn't appear on Wednesday's estimated injury report. Amendola, who underwent an arthroscopic knee procedure Nov. 29, was activated from injured reserve Christmas Day, but he ended up on the inactive list a day later for Houston's win over the Chargers. The Texans may have just wanted to exercise some extra caution with the veteran slot man by holding him out for another game, but his absence from the injury report entirely for Week 17 puts him on track to play Sunday in San Francisco. The 36-year-old doesn't necessarily fit in with the Texans' rebuilding effort, so he may not be tasked with a large role over the team's final two games of the season.
