Peterson said Monday in an interview with Clarence E. Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he will retire unless a team offers him an opportunity to play during the 2023 season. Peterson hasn't suited up for NFL action since 2021, when he appeared in three games with the Titans and one game with the Seahawks. The 38-year-old wasn't greeted with any signing opportunities last season and may not be the strongest candidate to find a role for the 2023 campaign, but it wouldn't be unheard of for a team to offer him a depth gig. Whenever Peterson does elect to retire, he'll likely be in line for a trip to the Hall of Fame.

Peterson and Le'Veon Bell are scheduled for a boxing match July 30, ESPN's Mike Coppinger reports. It's unclear if Peterson will try to sign with a team after the match, at which point NFL training camps will be underway. He said back in January that he wanted to continue playing, but he's clearly exploring other hobbies and business opportunities, perhaps due to limited interest from NFL teams. Peterson is 37 and finished out last season on Seattle's practice squad injured reserve list due to a back injury. He's presumably recovered from the injury if he's healthy enough for a boxing match.

Peterson (lower back) said Monday that he hopes to continue his career in 2022, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. Peterson dealt with a lower back injury for the final month of the regular season and finished the year on the practice squad injured list. He served mainly in an advisory role for the Seahawks' young running backs while he was hurt, but he hopes to recover during the offseason in hopes of playing somewhere in 2022. The 36-year-old appeared in four games with the Titans and Seahawks in 2021 and rushed 38 times for 98 yards and two touchdowns while securing all four of his targets for eight yards.

The Seahawks placed Peterson (lower back) on the practice squad injured list Wednesday, John Boyle of the team's official site reports. Coach Pete Carroll had an ominous tone when speaking of Peterson earlier Wednesday, saying the running back's lower back hadn't responded well to treatment, and that the team may have an update on his status soon, according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. With this transaction, Peterson's campaign is over. He'll finish his 15th season with 38 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns to go with four catches (on four targets) for eight yards in four appearances between Seattle (one) and Tennessee (three).

Peterson (lower back) wasn't elevated from the practice squad in advance of Tuesday's game against the Rams, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. Though Seattle is without two members of its running-back rotation (Alex Collins and Travis Homer) after both tested positive for COVID-19 in recent days, Peterson wasn't able to earn a call-up from the practice squad for the second week in a row. Since the Seahawks did elevate another running back (Josh Johnson), Peterson may still be working to recover from the sore lower back that has inhibited in him in practice of late. Peterson may be ready to go for Seattle's Week 16 game against the Bears, but even if he's added to the roster for that contest, he may find himself behind both Rashaad Penny and Collins in the pecking order for carries.
