• Robbie Gould: Hangs up cleats

  Gould announced his retirement from the NFL on Thursday, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports. Gould spent 18 seasons in the NFL, starting his career with 11 seasons in Chicago. After a one-year stop with the Giants, the Penn State product moved to San Francisco, where he spent his last six seasons. Gould made the Pro Bowl and All-Pro team in his second season, and he also led the league in made field goals in 2006 and 2017 while setting the pace in field-goal percentage in 2018. The 41-year-old was a free agent at the time of his announcement.

  Gould converted 84 percent of his field-goal attempts (27-for-32) across 17 regular-season games in 2022. Gould also converted a career-high 50 point-after tries on 51 attempts, rounding out another accurate fantasy season. The 40-year-old is scheduled to become a free agent this upcoming offseason and should have plenty of suitors if he chooses to hit the open market. If Gould opts to play for a team other than the 49ers in 2023, his fantasy value would remain high given his proven accuracy over the years.

  Gould made all four of his field-goal attempts and all three of his extra-point tries in Saturday's 41-23 win over the Seahawks in the wild-card round. Gould converted field goals from 34, 33, 46 and 31 yards. In matching his season high with 15 points, Gould now approaches Sunday's game against the Cowboys in the NFC divisional round in strong form.

Gould shanked a kick wide right from 41 yards as time expired in regulation, but he was able to redeem himself by hitting his next attempt in overtime to seal victory for his club. The veteran kicker has been highly productive over his last two games, racking up 26 combined points over that span. Gould could be busy again in the regular-season finale against the lowly Cardinals on Sunday.
