Aldon Smith: Let go by Seahawks

The Seahawks are releasing Aldon Smith, ESPN.com reports.Smith had signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks in April after spending the 2020 season with Dallas, where he logged 48 tackles and five sacks in 16 games. In the days following that, the defensive end -- who has been subject to NFL discipline on multiple occasions -- was arrested for an alleged second-degree battery, with his arraignment reportedly scheduled for later this month, per NFL.com. With Wednesday's move, the 31-year-old's playing status going forward is uncertain.

Seahawks' Aldon Smith: Jailed for alleged battery

Aldon Smith turned himself in at St. Bernard Parish Prison in Chalmette, La. on Tuesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with an alleged battery that occurred Saturday, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.According to the St. Bernard Parish District Attorney, Smith allegedly choked a victim unconscious during a confrontation that occurred in a coffee shop. He's scheduled to be arraigned July 14 on a second-degree battery charge, and if convicted, Smith would face a fine of up to $2,000 and/or eight years in prison. The Seattle Seahawks -- who signed Smith to a one-year, $1.13 million contract two days before the alleged incident occurred -- announced Monday in a statement that they are aware of the pass rusher's arrest and are still in the process of gathering more information on the matter.

Seahawks' Aldon Smith: Wanted on battery charge

Aldon Smith is wanted for a second-degree battery that occurred Saturday in Chalmette, La., Travers Mackel of WDSU New Orleans reports.Mackel notes that law enforcement has video of the alleged incident involving Smith, who has yet to turn himself into police. Since entering the NFL in 2011, Smith has endured numerous legal issues that sidetracked his career and notably kept him off the field for four full seasons before he played in all 16 games for Dallas in 2020. Smith came to terms on a one-year deal with Seattle two days before the alleged incident in Louisiana occurred, but that contract could be in jeopardy now that he's facing a battery charge.

    Seahawks' Aldon Smith: Joining Seahawks

Aldon Smith is signing a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.Smith returned from a four-year absence to start all 16 games for the Cowboys in 2020, recording 47 tackles, 14 QB hits and five sacks on 809 defensive snaps. It was a far cry from his peak production with the 49ers back in 2011 and 2012, but Smith should nonetheless be helpful in Seattle, where the pass rush has been lackluster since the heyday of Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril in the early-to-mid aughts. Depth at DE shouldn't be an issue in 2021, with Smith joined by Carlos Dunlap, L.J. Collier, Kerry Hyder, Darrell Taylor and Benson Mayowa.

Aldon Smith: Won't be back in Dallas

The Cowboys don't intend to re-sign Aldon Smith, Ed Werder of ESPN reports.Smith logged an impressive comeback season with the Cowboys in 2020, recording 48 tackles and five sacks while playing the full 16-game slate in what was his first NFL action since 2015. Though he opened the season on a high note, he lost some steam down the stretch, going without a sack from Weeks 9 through 17. Now a free agent and with Dallas having decided to move on, Smith will likely have to settle for a rotational role with another club regardless of where he lands next.

Cowboys' Aldon Smith: Incredible comeback in 2020

Aldon Smith recorded 48 tackles (31 solo) with five sacks, two passes defended and two fumble recoveries over 16 games in 2020.Were it not for Alex Smith, Aldon would have been a shoo-in for the Comeback Player of the Year Award. The 31-year-old edge rusher hadn't played in an NFL game since 2015, but after getting his life in order off the field he made his return and demonstrated that he still retained a lot of his elite athleticism, posting a three-sack day against the Seahawks in Week 3 and returning a fumble 78 yards for a touchdown against the Bengals in Week 14. The Dallas Cowboys and new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn likely will make every effort to bring Smith back next season, but the veteran will be looking for a significant raise on the $2 million he made in 2020.
