Phillip Thomas didn't play in 2016 after being placed on season-ending injured reserve in training camp with an undisclosed injury.While Thomas' injury is unclear, the team has given no indication that he'll miss any time once offseason practices begin. Thomas is under contract with the Buffalo Bills through 2017 and will be looking to make an opening week active roster for the first time since being drafted in 2013. He'll most likely compete for a depth role in the secondary and a special teams position.

Redskins dump 2013 fourth-rounder Phillip Thomas
A disappointing start to the career of strong safety Phillip Thomas has been punctuated by his release from the Washington Redskins. The fourth-round pick in 2013 lost his rookie sesaon to Lisfranc surgery and was hampered by hamstring issues much of last year, during which he made 27 tackles. But he was buried on the depth chart to start 2015 and was deemed expendable, per the Washington Post.

Report: Redskins to sign S Phillip Thomas to active roster
The Washington Redskins will sign safety Phillip Thomas to the active roster prior to Sunday's game against the Vikings, ESPN.com reports. Thomas was unable to survive final roster cuts during the preseason. He suffered a season-ending foot injury during the previous preseason and has yet to appear in a regular-season game.

Redskins complete cut-down Saturday
The Washington Redskins have sliced their roster down to the league-mandated 53 with several cuts on Saturday. Included among the waived offensive players are running backs Evan Royster, Lache Seastrunk and Chris Thompson. Also gone from that side of the ball are wide receiver Nick Williams and lineman Maurice Hurt . Defenders cut loose are cornerback Chase Minnifield, linebacker Everette Brown and safety Phillip Thomas. Placekicker Zach Hocker has also been waived. The Redskins have also placed defensive tackle Chris Neild and linebacker Darryl Sharpton on the reserve/injured list and defensive end Stephen Bowen and wide receiver Leonard Hankerson on the PUP list.

Several cut loose by Redskins
The Washington Redskins have announced several cuts. Included are rookie kicker Zach Hocker, linebacker Everette Brown and defensive backs Chase Minnifield and Phillip Thomas. The most surprising move was the one involving Thomas, a strong safety who was taken in the fourth round of the 2013 draft.

Phillip Thomas hurt against Titans
Washington Redskins safety Phillip Thomas suffered a mid-foot sprain in the first quarter of Thursday’s preseason opener against the Titans, reports Comcast Sports Net. Thomas was injured while tackling Shonn Greene. The rookie suffered a shoulder stinger on impact, then fell awkwardly on his left foot. He left the locker room wearing a walking boot. The shoulder is not a concern, he said.
