Lions' Joshua Dobbs: Makes case for backup job in Detroit
Joshua Dobbs completed 15 of 19 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 25-16 preseason win over the Colts. He also recorded minus-1 yard on five carries.Undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer got the start at quarterback for the Detroit Lions in their final exhibition contest and played the first and third quarters as the battle to be Jared Goff's primary backup goes down to the wire, but Dobbs put up superior numbers while running the offense in the second and fourth quarters. The veteran signal-caller didn't commit a turnover and led three TD drives in total, hitting Jackson Meeks for a six-yard score and Tay Martin with a two-yard toss before halftime before handing off to Trayveon Williams for a one-yard plunge on Detroit's first possession of the fourth quarter. Whoever wins the job as the No. 2 likely won't see much action, however -- Goff hasn't missed a game due to injury since 2021.

Lions' Joshua Dobbs: Logs explosive run Saturday
Joshua Dobbs completed seven of his 12 passes for 74 yards and an interception while adding two carries for 53 yards and a touchdown on the ground in Saturday's 17-13 preseason win over the Commanders.Dobbs had a rather uneventful day passing, taking an egregious 15-yard sack and throwing a pressured interception in his one quarter of play. The backup quarterback's real value came on the ground when he rushed for a 50-yard breakaway touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. While Dobbs may not have had a stellar passing outing, third-string quarterback Luke Altmyer also had a disappointing day while taking four sacks for 35 yards and throwing for only 86 total passing yards in his half of play.

Lions' Joshua Dobbs: Throws eight passes in Lions debut
Joshua Dobbs completed four of eight passes for 32 yards and added a nine-yard run in Thursday's 16-14 preseason loss to the Bengals.Dobbs made his Detroit Lions debut four days after singing with the team Sunday in the wake of Teddy Bridgewater's retirement. Luke Altmyer got the start Thursday and turned the ball over three times, so the undrafted rookie seems unlikely to challenge Dobbs for the second spot on the depth chart behind Jared Goff once Dobbs familiarizes himself with Detroit's playbook. Dobbs is likely to play more extensively against the Commanders on Aug. 22 in the Lions' second preseason game.

Lions' Joshua Dobbs: Inks deal with Detroit
Joshua Dobbs signed a one-year, $1.425 million contract with the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. The contract includes $475,000 guaranteed and gives the Lions a veteran backup behind Jared Goff following Teddy Bridgewater's decision to retire. Luke Altmyer is the other quarterback on Detroit's 90-man roster, but the undrafted rookie will likely revert to the QB3 role now that Dobbs is in the picture. Dobbs served as Drake Maye's backup in New England last season, and the former has appeared in 27 regular-season games (15 starts) since entering the league as a fourth-round selection of the Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Joshua Dobbs: Being let go by New England
The Patriots intend to cut Joshua Dobbs, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. In 2025, his lone campaign with the Patriots, Dobbs served as the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Drake Maye, who started all 17 of New England's regular-season contests. Dobbs thus was limited to 10 passing attempts and 10 carries during his four appearances in that span. In light of the looming move, Tommy DeVito now slots in as Maye's top backup, while Dobbs will look to catch on elsewhere as a veteran signal-caller option with NFL starting experience (including 12 in 2023).

Patriots' Joshua Dobbs: Nabbed by Pats
Joshua Dobbs agreed to a two-year contract with the New England Patriots on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.Dobbs served as a reserve quarterback for the 49ers in 2024 but got the Week 18 start with Brock Purdy (elbow) sidelined and Brandon Allen already earning a start himself Week 12. Between a pair of appearances, Dobbs completed 32 of 47 passes for 361 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, rushed nine times for 24 yards and two TDs and fumbled twice (one lost). In stints with five different teams, he's made 15 starts with a 3-12 record, so he brings an experienced hand behind rising second-year QB Drake Maye in New England.

49ers' Joshua Dobbs: Fills box score in losing effort
Joshua Dobbs completed 29 of 43 pass attempts for 326 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing eight times for 17 yards and a third score while coughing up a fumble in Sunday's 47-24 loss to Arizona.Dobbs showed mixed results in his first official start with San Francisco after finishing last week's contest in place of Brock Purdy (elbow). The Passtronaut took DFS players on a wild ride that resulted in gaudy fantasy totals despite committing three turnovers against Arizona. The journeyman backup likely cemented a similar role next season, whether he returns to the San Francisco 49ers or latches on with another club.

49ers' Joshua Dobbs: Slated to start in Week 18
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Joshua Dobbs will start Sunday's game at Arizona, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.Dobbs served as the San Francisco 49ers' backup quarterback over Brandon Allen in Monday's 40-34 loss to the Lions, and the former saw the field late in the fourth quarter when Brock Purdy exited with an elbow injury. Dobbs proceeded to complete three of four passes for 35 yards and ran for a seven-yard touchdown on his five snaps. Purdy since has been diagnosed with a contusion and nerve inflammation in his throwing elbow, which is expected to sideline him for Week 18 action. Dobbs thus is in line for his first start of the campaign as the 49ers close out the season.

49ers' Joshua Dobbs: Relieves Purdy, could start Week 18
Joshua Dobbs took the field for the San Francisco 49ers' final five offensive snaps of Monday's 40-34 loss to the Lions and completed three of four pass attempts for 35 yards while rushing for a seven-yard touchdown.Made active over Brandon Allen as the 49ers' No. 2 quarterback for Week 17, Dobbs was thrust into action with 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter, when starter Brock Purdy was forced out of the game with an elbow injury. Dobbs proceeded to finish out the drive with a touchdown run, but the 49ers' comeback bid ended when the Lions recovered the ensuing onside kick. Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Purdy will likely be held out for Sunday's season finale in Arizona after an MRI revealed a contusion and nerve inflammation to his throwing elbow, but Shanahan was not willing to commit to whether Dobbs or Allen would draw the starting nod for Week 18. Shanahan told Maiocco that Dobbs' scrambling ability was a primary factor in the decision to keep him active ahead of Allen against the Lions, but Dobbs has otherwise been behind Allen on the depth chart all season.
