49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Designated to return from IR
The San Francisco 49ers designated Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) to return from injured reserve Monday. The move officially opens McCaffrey's 21-day practice window, and he's expected to be on the field Monday. Coach Kyle Shanahan has long pointed at Week 10 as a potential return date for the 49ers' star running back, and this is the first step in that process. As long as all goes well in practice this week, McCaffrey has a real chance to be in the lineup for his 2024 debut next Sunday against the Bucs.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Set for simulated practice this week
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) will remain in the Bay Area during the San Francisco 49ers' Week 9 bye to take part in "simulated practice stuff," Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. "It depends how this week goes," Shanahan said, when asked if McCaffrey will be available to make his season debut Week 10 at Tampa Bay. "He's had no setbacks, so it looks like we're on track, but he's going to hit it hard this week while we're gone...as long as it all goes good, hopefully we'll get him back in practice next week."McCaffrey has been sidelined all season after tweaking his calf Aug. 6 and then battling Achilles tendinitis in both of his legs, with the latter injury being the greater concern at this time. The 28-year-old seems to have made strong progress over the past few weeks, and he'll take another step forward when he gets in some on-field work during the 49ers' bye week. Since his activity during the upcoming week won't count as official practice time, the 49ers will wait until next Monday to possibly (or likely) designate him for return from injured reserve, which will open up a 21-day evaluation window. The 49ers will then release their first Week 10 injury report next Wednesday, when it will be known whether McCaffrey is practicing on a limited basis or without restrictions. Assuming McCaffrey is able to ramp up over the next two weeks with no setbacks, he should be ready to suit up against the Buccaneers, though the 49ers may not be keen on giving him a full workload in what would be his first game since Super Bowl LVIII last February.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Set to practice during bye week
Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) is on track to participate in a "bonus" practice that the San Francisco 49ers have scheduled during their Week 9 bye, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.Though the extent of his practice activity won't be known until the 49ers release their next injury report Wednesday, Nov. 6, McCaffrey's expected involvement in on-field drills during the bye week bodes well for his chances of making his season debut during the 49ers' Week 10 game Nov. 10 at Tampa Bay. McCaffrey sat out the entire preseason with a calf strain before being diagnosed with bilateral Achilles tendinitis in September. He made a visit to Germany just over a month ago to meet with a specialist regarding the injury, and McCaffrey has seemingly made good progress in his recovery ever since. If McCaffrey is in fact cleared to play coming out of the Week 9 bye, he could be eased back in with a lighter snap count Week 10 against the Buccaneers rather than immediately reclaiming a three-down workhorse role.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Unlikely for Sunday, may play Week 10
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) is unlikely to practice this week, but the San Francisco 49ers are hopeful the running back will be able to return after their Week 9 bye for a Nov. 10 game at Tampa Bay, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.Shanahan added that he would be "surprised" if McCaffrey is able to play Sunday against the Cowboys, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. The 49ers can designate McCaffrey to return from injured reserve at any point, which would allow him to get back on the practice field and give San Francisco 21 days in which to activate him. With McCaffrey still sidelined, though, Jordan Mason will continue to operate as the 49ers' lead running back.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Won't return Week 7
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) won't return to practice next week, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. It means McCaffrey will miss at least one more game, leaving either Jordan Mason (shoulder) or Isaac Guerendo as the lead back for a Super Bowl rematch with the Chiefs on Sunday, Oct. 20. Mason suffered an AC joint sprain during Thursday's win over Seattle, leaving Guerendo and Patrick Taylor to handle backfield snaps after halftime.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Encouraging signs after workouts
Christian McCaffrey (Achilles/calf) won't return when eligible Week 6 against the Seahawks, but he did on-field work this week and didn't experience any flareups, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports. The workouts marked McCaffrey's first on-field activity since landing on injured reserve Sept. 14 and came less than two weeks after he visited a specialist in Germany. Schefter notes that while McCaffrey is dealing with bilateral Achilles tendinitis, the issue is concentrated mainly to one of his legs at this stage, and the running back's lack of a flareup this week was viewed as "mild encouragement." Even so, McCaffrey's return will be dependent on how he fares in practice, and Schefter relays that the 28-year-old may be ready to play as soon as Oct. 20 versus Kansas City if he steers clear of setbacks. Schefter also acknowledges the possibility that San Francisco could opt to sit McCaffrey out through the team's Week 9 bye in order to give him an extra week of recovery, so an actual target date for a return remains hazy. Jordan Mason will continue to start at running back for the San Francisco 49ers for as long as McCaffrey remains out.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Has tendinitis in both Achilles
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Christian McCaffrey is tending to tendinitis in both of his Achilles, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. "I think it started in one, and you overcompensate, it went to the other," Shanahan added. "Mainly one of them has just been bothering him, but he's had it in both."After a recent visit to Germany to meet with a specialist, McCaffrey returned to San Francisco, and a plan for ramping up his activity level was mentioned by Shanahan last Thursday on 104.5 KNBR. In particular, Shanahan noted the San Francisco 49ers will "start testing it out here sooner rather than later." McCaffrey must remain on injured reserve through at least Week 5, but he's slated to miss more time than that considering he has no timetable to return. A report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Sunday relayed that McCaffrey may run on hard ground this week, and there's a chance he'll be back in action by early November. The coming weeks should be key to determining when McCaffrey could be available for his season debut.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: May be eying early November return
There's a chance Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) will run on hard ground this coming week, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.McCaffrey, who is dealing with Achilles tendonitis, remains on IR and without a clear timetable for a return, but Rapoport suggests that the running back should be back, at least, by early November. In the meantime, Jordan Mason is on track to lead the San Francisco 49ers' backfield while McCaffrey remains sidelined.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Ready to increase activity level
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) may "start hitting the rehab here harder on Monday," Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.McCaffrey has returned from his trip to Germany to see a specialist for his Achilles tendinitis. He won't be eligible to return from injured reserve until Week 6 and still may be out much longer than that, but it sounds like he's at least gotten clearance to increase his activity level within the next few days.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Plan coming together for recovery
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday on 104.5 KNBR that the San Francisco 49ers will "probably turn it up here in the next couple of weeks" with Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles). "We'll start testing it out here sooner rather than later," Shanahan added.Because McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve prior to the 49ers' Week 2 loss at Minnesota, he won't be eligible to practice until before a Week 6 road matchup with the Seahawks. Having said that, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Sept. 15 that McCaffrey could miss six weeks or perhaps more than that. If San Francisco ultimately designates McCaffrey to return from IR, he'd have three weeks to test out his Achilles before the team would need to make a decision to activate him. The hope is that his recent visit to Germany to meet with a specialist will aid in the recovery of what's been ailing McCaffrey, but for as long as he's sidelined, the 49ers will entrust most of the backfield reps to Jordan Mason.
