Cardinals' Gardner Minshew: Taking over as starting quarterback

Head coach Mike LaFleur announced that Gardner Minshew will step in as the Arizona Cardinals' new starting quarterback beginning with Sunday's game at Seattle, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.Unsurprisingly, the Cardinals have opted to appoint Minshew to the top spot on the depth chart after he came on in relief of a struggling Jacoby Brissett and led a stirring comeback in Sunday's 33-30 overtime win over the Cowboys. In what was his first appearance of the season, Minshew completed 17 of 23 pass attempts for 188 yards and three touchdowns in just under two quarters' worth of action before Chad Ryland sealed the victory with a walk-off 42-yard field goal. Though his performance in future games will ultimately dictate how long he sticks around as the Cardinals' starter, Minshew is far from a lock to hold down the job for the balance of the season. If the 3-5 Cardinals eventually fade from playoff contention, LaFleur may want to give an extended look to rookie third-round pick Carson Beck, who will serve as Minshew's top backup in Week 9 while Brissett falls to third on the depth chart, per Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site.

Cardinals' Gardner Minshew: Leads Cards to comeback win

Gardner Minshew completed 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions after he replaced starting QB Jacoby Brissett late in the third quarter of Sunday's 33-30 overtime win in Dallas. When Minshew took over the Arizona Cardinals offense with 1:35 remaining in the third quarter, the team was trailing 17-3, and he proceeded to direct four consecutive TD drives to force overtime, which ended (in order) with a 63-yard run via RB Tyler Allgeier, a five-yard catch from Allgeier, a 14-yard connection with TE Trey McBride and a 13-yard reception from WR Michael Wilson. All three players were the top remaining options at their positions at the time, and Minshew ended up out-producing Brissett by 69 passing yards in roughly two fewer quarters of play. Afterward, head coach Mike LaFleur told Darren Urban of the team's official site that he won't commit to a starting QB for next Sunday's game at Seattle just yet, but it won't surprise if a change under center is imminent in Arizona.

Cardinals' Gardner Minshew: Tosses touchdown in preseason finale

Gardner Minshew completed seven of nine passes for 126 yards and a touchdown while taking a 10-yard sack during the Arizona Cardinals' 42-38 preseason loss to the Packers on Friday.Minshew was named the Cardinals' starter for Friday's preseason finale while Jacoby Brissett and Carson Beck (ribs) observed the game from the sidelines. Minshew was under center for Arizona's first two offensive series and led scoring drives on both, with the second ending with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Simi Fehoko. Brissett figures to be the Cardinals' starter for at least the beginning of the 2026 regular season, but it's not clear who will be the backup between Minshew and Beck.

Cardinals' Gardner Minshew: Moving back to No. 2 role

Gardner Minshew, who handled first-team reps at practice Sunday, will move back to the No. 2 quarterback role when the Arizona Cardinals return to practice Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.Minshew will bump back to the backup role now that teammate Jacoby Brissett has come to terms with Arizona on a new contract that provides him a raise for the 2026 campaign. Expectations are that Minshew will kick off the regular season as the No. 2 option behind Brissett, though rookie third-rounder Carson Beck also will have the chance to compete for opportunities in training camp. Minshew is fully recovered from the season-ending knee injury he suffered while operating as the backup to Patrick Mahomes (ACL) in Kansas City in 2025.

Cardinals' Gardner Minshew: Fellow QB works out with teammates

Gardner Minshew's teammate Jacoby Brissett, who is in the midst of a contract dispute with the Arizona Cardinals, posted a recent photo Thursday on Instagram that showed him getting in some work with several teammates, Tyler Drake of Arizonasports.com reports. That Brissett -- who didn't take a single practice rep during Arizona's offseason program -- connected with WRs Marvin Harrison and Simi Fehoko, TEs Trey McBride and Elijah Higgins along with fellow QB Kedon Slovis is a positive sign, but at this stage it's unclear if or for how long the signal-caller's contract issue lingers once the Cardinals re-take the field. In the absence of Brissett, the team's expected Week 1 starter, Minshew took the majority of first-team QB reps throughout the offseason, so this will be a situation worth monitoring closely once Arizona's training camp commences July 22.

    Cardinals' Gardner Minshew: Joining Arizona

Gardner Minshew is in line to sign a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.Minshew's odds of starting Week 1 will depend on Arizona's other moves this offseason, with Jacoby Brissett and Kedon Slovis being the other QBs currently under contract. Minshew replaced an injured Patrick Mahomes (knee) in Kansas City this past December, only to suffer a season-ending knee injury of his own during his first start. Initial reports said the injury might be an ACL tear, but Minshew ultimately was diagnosed with just a bone bruise and made a full recovery by the end of January, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Chiefs' Gardner Minshew: Avoids surgery, already healthy

Gardner Minshew (knee) will not require any procedures to address the season-ending knee injury he suffered in Week 16 and is already back to full strength, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.Minshew missed the final two games of the regular season due to a left knee injury initially reported as a torn ACL and was then diagnosed as a non-displaced tibial plateau fracture, though Schefter now reports that the veteran quarterback merely suffered a bone bruise. After having played out the 2025 season on a one-year, $1.17 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, Minshew will now be fully healthy in time to hit free agency this offseason. If he doesn't reunite with Kansas City, Minshew should have little difficulty securing a backup role elsewhere in the league.

Chiefs' Gardner Minshew: Sent to injured reserve

The Kansas City Chiefs placed Gardner Minshew (knee) on injured reserve Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. While Minshew avoided a torn ACL, which was the initial fear Sunday, he's been diagnosed with a non-displaced tibial plateau fracture, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. It's enough to end Minshew's season, as he'll miss the final two weeks. In the meantime, Kansas City will play out the string on the season with Chris Oladokun and Shane Buechele as its quarterback options.

Chiefs' Gardner Minshew: Avoids torn ACL

Gardner Minshew's MRI on Monday revealed that he didn't suffer a torn ACL in Sunday's loss to the Titans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.Rapoport adds that Minshew has been diagnosed with a non-displaced tibial plateau fracture, which is considered a very bad bone bruise. Minshew still is expected to miss game time due to the knee injury, but it's good news for the veteran quarterback nonetheless after a torn ACL was the initial fear. Chris Oladokun came on in relief of Minshew versus Tennessee and completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 scoreless yards. He also rushed two times for seven yards. With Minshew joining Patrick Mahomes (knee) on the shelf, the Kansas City Chiefs are slated to sign Shane Buechele off the Bills' practice squad to join Oladokun in the quarterback room.
