Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Slated to start Week 3

Skylar Thompson is in line to serve as the Miami Dolphins' starting quarterback for Sunday's game in Seattle, Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com reports.According to Jones, the Dolphins are proceeding "day by day" in deciding whether Tua Tagovailoa will require a stint on injured reserve after he was diagnosed with his fourth documented concussion in the past five years. At the very least, the Dolphins aren't planning on Tagovailoa being available for the Week 3 game, so Thompson will step in for his first start since 2022. Thompson has made eight regular-season appearances overall through his first three years in the NFL, completing 68 of 119 pass attempts (57.1 percent) for 614 yards (5.2 YPA), one touchdown and three interceptions while adding 25 yards on 15 carries. Given the poor efficiency he's displayed as a passer thus far in addition to the likelihood that the Dolphins deploy a run-heavy game plan in Week 3, Thompson looks to be a low-end lineup option in fantasy leagues that start two quarterbacks or have a superflex spot.

Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Has McDaniel's confidence

Coach Mike McDaniel said Friday that Skylar Thompson is the "next man up" at quarterback with Tua Tagovailoa in the concussion protocol, but that Miami will likely bring in a third-stringer from outside the organization, Alain Poupart of SI.com reports.McDaniel said Miami is "very confident" in Thompson, who appears slated to start Week 3 against the Seahawks on Sunday, Sept. 22 if Tagovailoa is unable to clear concussion protocol, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Thompson entered Thursday night's 31-10 divisional loss to the Buffalo with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter, completing eight of 14 passes for 80 yards without a touchdowns or interception. He also rushed once for four yards, operating an offense without top wideouts Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle, who were both pulled from the matchup early. During the preseason, Thompson beat out Mike White for the Miami Dolphins' backup gig by virtue of completing 35 of 61 passes for 379 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions across three exhibition contests.

Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Serviceable in emergency duty

Skylar Thompson entered Thursday night's 31-10 loss to the Bills for an injured Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter and completed eight of 14 passes for 80 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also rushed once for four yards.Thompson fired incomplete and took a sack on his first two dropbacks, but he was able to start getting into somewhat of a rhythm on his next possession. Nevertheless, the game was essentially out of reach by early in the final period, and Thompson subsequently led an offense that was without Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle due to the two being pulled early from the lopsided loss. Thompson had some moments of success as a starter in Tagovailoa's stead back in 2022, and he'll be called on to fill in again in a Week 3 road matchup against the Seahawks on Sunday, Sept. 22 if Tagovailoa is unable to clear concussion protocol.

It was an open competition for the No. 2 job between Thompson and White during the offseason and training camp, and the former won the battle by completing 35 of 61 passes for 379 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions across three preseason games. Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Serving as emergency QB in Week 1

Skylar Thompson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's Week 1 game against the Chargers and has been designated as the emergency quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa and Mike White. The Miami Dolphins announced Thompson would begin the season as the No. 3 quarterback earlier in the week, and this makes it official with respect to Week 1. Thompson unexpectedly received plenty of playing time last season as a rookie seventh-round pick, arguably making him one of the more battle-tested No. 3 signal-callers around the NFL despite his brief time in the league. He'll only see action versus Los Angeles if both Tagovailoa and White are sidelined with in-game injuries.

Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Starting as third-stringer

Skylar Thompson will open the season as Miami's No. 3 quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa and Mike White, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.Thompson has officially lost the backup competition to Mike White, as expected. The 2022 seventh-round pick still has a ways to go in his development but did flash intriguing traits as a rookie, so the Miami Dolphins have plenty of reason to continue his development. The league's new rules will allow all of Tagovailoa, White and Thompson to be active on game days, starting with Sunday's regular-season opener against the Chargers.
