Frank Gore: Set to retire
Frank Gore said Saturday in an interview with TheSFNiners.com that he plans to sign a one-day contract with the 49ers soon to formally announce his retirement from the NFL.The soon-to-be 39-year-old running back didn't play in 2021, though he previously noted that he kept himself in playing shape in the event an opportunity emerged with a team. He'll now formally call a close to a career that began in 2005, when San Francisco selected him with its third-round pick in the draft. Over a 16-year run in the NFL that includes stops with the 49ers, Colts, Dolphins, Bills and Jets, the durable Gore appeared in 241 regular-season games and logged 16,000 rushing yards, 3,985 receiving yards and 99 touchdowns. His rushing total is the third-highest mark in league history.

Frank Gore: May turn focus to boxing
Frank Gore has yet to formally announce his retirement from the NFL, but the 38-year-old told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that he's been training for both football and boxing.Gore said that boxing has always been a passion, and training for the ring may be the bigger focus for him at this point than football, as Rapoport notes that a high-profile fight could be in the works for the veteran running back. The NFL's third-leading all-time rusher hasn't completely closed the door on football, but Rapoport notes that Gore has thus far declined all inquiries from teams since he became a free agent this spring. Before missing the Jets' final two games of 2020 with a lung contusion, Gore played in 14 contests and tallied 653 yards and two touchdowns on 187 carries, which translated to a career-worst 3.5 yards per tote.

Jets' Frank Gore: Undecided on future
Frank Gore (lung contusion) said Tuesday that he hasn't determined whether he wants to return to the NFL for a 17th season, Eric Allen of the New York Jets' official site reports. "I still have fun playing the game of football, but I haven't made a decision yet," Gore said of his future. Before sitting out the Jets' Week 17 loss to the Patriots with a bruised lung, Gore had served as the team's primary running back throughout the season, compiling 653 yards and two touchdowns on the ground to go with 16 receptions for 89 yards. The 37-year-old has long been valued by teams as a mentor for younger players in the locker room, but his on-field productivity has been on the decline for quite some time. He's now averaged fewer than four yards per carry in five of the past six years, with his 3.5 average in 2020 representing a new career low. If Gore decides to keep his career going and finds an opportunity with a team in 2021, don't expect him to handle nearly as sizable a role as he handled with the Jets this past season.

Jets' Frank Gore: Moved to IR
The New York Jets placed Frank Gore (lung) on injured reserve Wednesday, Andy Vasquez of USA Today reports.Gore suffered a lung contusion in last week's win over the Browns and had already been ruled out for Sunday's season finale against the Patriots. Though Gore has offered no indication that he intends to retire after this season, it's fair to wonder if the 37-year-old running back's time in the NFL is over. Prior to sustaining his injury last week, Gore raised his season rushing yardage total to exactly 653, allowing him to reach 16,000 yards for his career. Only Emmitt Smith (18,355) and Walter Payton (16,726) have more.

Jets' Frank Gore: Out for season finale
Frank Gore is dealing with a lung contusion and has been ruled out for the Week 17 game against the Patriots, Al Iannazzone of Newsday reports.Gore left this past Sunday's 23-16 win over the Browns early, but not before becoming the third player to reach 16,000 rushing yards in his career. The 37-year-old running back will miss a game for just the third time in the past 10 seasons. Gore will be an unrestricted free agent in March, and it's unclear if he'll return for his 17th NFL season.

Jets' Frank Gore: Injured after hitting milestone
Frank Gore suffered a chest injury in the second half of Sunday's 23-16 win over the Browns, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports. He rushed 14 times for 48 yards and caught his only target for five yards prior to sustaining the injury.Gore came in needing 48 rushing yards to become the third player to reach 16,000, and he got exactly enough to hit the milestone before exiting with his injury. If the veteran running back is unable to heal up in time for next week's season finale against the Patriots, La'Mical Perine and Ty Johnson would be in line for additional touches in New York's backfield.

Jets' Frank Gore: Finds end zone in upset win
Frank Gore carried the ball 23 times for 59 yards and a touchdown and caught his only target for six yards in Sunday's 23-20 upset of the Rams. The veteran back saw his largest workload of the season on an afternoon when the New York Jets led for most of the game. While the extra touches didn't turn into much yardage, Gore did punch in a one-yard score in the third quarter for his second TD of the year. Ty Johnson saw only nine touches, though he also found the end zone, and Gore still appears to be coach Adam Gase's preferred early-down and short-yardage option heading into a Week 16 home tilt against the Browns.

Jets' Frank Gore: Held in check Sunday
Frank Gore carried the ball eight times for 23 yards and caught his only target for eight yards in Sunday's 40-3 loss to the Seahawks. The veteran's 31 scrimmage yards actually led the New York Jets backfield, although Josh Adams (eight touches for 30 scrimmage yards) and Ty Johnson (eight carries for 16 rushing yards) saw comparable workloads. Gore is likely headed for another poor performance in Week 15's road clash with the Rams, especially if he remains stuck in a committee.

Jets' Frank Gore: Listed as active Sunday
Frank Gore (concussion) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.Gore is available Sunday and in line to face a Seattle defense that overall this season has been better at stopping the run than the pass. Additionally, in a game where the Seahawks are heavily favored, the veteran back could lose some touches to Ty Johnson, who logged 104 rushing yards and a TD on 22 carries after taking over for Gore in last Sunday's loss to the Raiders.

Jets' Frank Gore: Optimism regarding Week 14 status
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network indicates that "there is optimism" that Frank Gore (concussion) will play Sunday against the Seahawks.Rapoport adds that Gore's availability for the contest depends on the running back clearing a final hurdle in the concussion protocol Sunday morning. Either way, Gore's Week 14 status will be confirmed once the New York Jets' inactives are posted in advance of the team's 4:05 ET kickoff. If Gore ultimately ends up out or limited at all, Ty Johnson would be in line for added backfield touches versus Seattle.
