Smith was recalled by the Hurricanes on Sunday, Walt Ruff of the team's official site reports.
Smith was sent to the AHL at the end of November, but he'll rejoin the Hurricanes to provide additional depth. He hasn't yet appeared in an NHL game this season, so Smith's unlikely to play a significant role during his upcoming stint with Carolina.
