Johnson was sent to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday.
Johnson was acquired by Pittsburgh from Buffalo on Monday in exchange for Caleb Jones and Daniel Laatsch. The 25-year-old Johnson has been a healthy scratch in three straight games since the trade, so a move to the minors will give him an opportunity to get some ice time.
