Backes retired as a member of the Blues after signing a one-day contract with St. Louis on Thursday. Over his 15-year NHL career, Backes played 10 seasons with St. Louis in which he registered 206 goals and 254 assists in 727 games for the club. With additional stops in Boston and Anaheim, the Minneapolis native played in a total of 965 games after having been selected in the second round of the 2003 NHL Draft.

Backes was promoted to the active roster under emergency conditions Saturday, per CapFriendly. Backes is set to skate in a fourth-line role. He joined the lineup after Jakob Silfverberg (hip) was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Backes was demoted to the taxi squad Sunday, according to CapFriendly. Backes came out of the lineup Sunday with Ryan Getzlaf (upper body) returning from injured reserve. The veteran forward has four points in 13 games this season and will spend most of his time as a healthy scratch.

Backes was promoted to the Ducks' active roster for Friday's matchup with the Avalanche. After a two-point effort Tuesday, Backes is suiting up again Friday. The 36-year-old has four points through 12 games this season.

Backes was assigned to the taxi squad Wednesday, per CapFriendly. Backes notched a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Sharks. Even with the strong performance, Backes likely will only stay in the lineup as long as the Ducks' injury issues persist.
