  • Braydon Coburn: Officially retires
    By RotoWire

Coburn announced his retirement from professional hockey Friday. A Stanley Cup champion with Tampa Bay in 2019-20, the 2003 No. 8 overall pick recorded 234 points, 720 PIM and 1,298 shots over a 983-game career. Coburn partook in a total of three Stanley Cup Finals and seven conference finals, suiting up for five teams (Atlanta, Philadelphia, Tampa, Ottawa and the Islanders).

  • Coburn, as expected, was a healthy scratch in the Islanders' 4-3 overtime victory over the Penguins in the playoff opener. Coburn is a break glass in case of an emergency defenseman. He is only expected to play in this series if one of the Isles' top six defenders suffers an injury.

  • Coburn has only played two games with the Islanders since being acquired at the trade deadline. The Islanders traded for Coburn because they wanted an insurance policy in case one of their top six defenders got injured. The Isles trust Coburn more than Thomas Hickey or Sebastian Aho, but Coburn won't crack the lineup barring an injury, unless the Islanders opt to rest one of their regulars on defense now that they have clinched a playoff spot.

  • Coburn cleared the NHL's COVID-19 protocols and joined the Islanders for practice Wednesday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Coburn will serve as a depth option for the Islanders down the stretch and into the playoffs after being acquired by New York via a trade with Ottawa on Sunday. The veteran blueliner has picked up two helpers while averaging 16:25 of ice time per contest in 16 appearances with the Senators this year.

  • Ottawa traded Coburn to the Islanders in exchange for a 2022 seventh-round pick Sunday. Ottawa has now traded Coburn and Mike Reilly in a matter of minutes as Monday's trade deadline approaches. The 6-foot-5 blueliner will be a depth piece as the Islanders gear up for a playoff run. He has two points and 25 hits through 16 games this season.
