Months after making their relationship public, Lindsey Vonn and Tiger Woods made their first appearance together at a red carpet event on Monday night, when the couple attended the Met Gala in New York.
While Woods made the appearance before heading to this week’s Players’ Championship in Ponte Vedra, Fla. Vonn continues to rehab from a horrific injury suffered during the Super-G at the World Championships in February. Vonn was airlifted off the course in Schladming, Austria after tearing two ligaments in her right knee and suffering a broken bone in her lower leg.
Vonn vows to be healthy enough by next February to compete at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Vonn, 28, won a gold medal in the downhill and a bronze in the Super-G at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
“I’m doing alright, my rehab is going very well but it’s a slow process,” Vonn told Access Hollywood last week at the 2013 Delete Blood Cancer Gala. “I hope to start skiing again in September.”
The 10-time World Championship medalist suffered the injury when her right ski hit a jump awkwardly causing her knee to bend at a 90 degree angle, before she summersaulted into a gate and skidded off the course. A number of Vonn’s competitors dropped their jaws agape in incredulity, as the 2010 USOC sportswoman of the year writhed on the ground in pain. Vonn has recently added strength work to her regimen.
“It’s mostly just strength and endurance stuff,” Vonn said. “I just started doing weights which I’m excited about.”
In a positive sign for Vonn in her recovery, the skier was able to attend last week’s gala without wearing a knee brace.
“This is the first time I’m able to go out without my brace on,” Vonn said. “It’s been a difficult fashion piece to work with lately.”
