After more than five months, the Oscar Pistorius trial came to a close on Friday, all that's left is for a verdict from Judge Thokozile Masipa. Following closing arguments, the judge said she would issue a verdict on Pistorius on Sept. 11, a little more than five weeks from now.
Pistorius is facing murder charges after he shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp to death on Valentine's Day of last year from behind a closed door; he pled not guilty.
Throughout the trial, Pistorius' defense says it was a case of mistaken identity, that he didn't know it was his girlfriend but instead believed her to be an intruder. The prosecution says it's all an elaborate tale and Pistorius knew what he was doing.
The prosecution is seeking a charge of premeditated murder, which would mean at least 25 years in prison with the potential for a life sentence. He is also facing three firearm charges.
Pistorius captivated the world two years ago in London when he took part in the Olympic Games as a sprinter despite having both of his legs amputated as a child. Nicknamed the Blade Runner, he ran on his prosthetic limbs in the 400 meter sprint, finishing last in his semifinal heat. He also took part in the 4x400 relay for South Africa. He was the first amputee runner to ever compete in the Olympics.
