A Texas high school football player has died after collapsing during a game Friday, according to the Jacksonville Progress.
Alto High School principal Scott Walters confirmed in a Facebook post Saturday evening that player Cam'ron Matthews died after he collapsed just before halftime of Friday's home game against Price-Carlisle.
"I am very sorry to say that Cam'ron Matthews has stopped his fight this evening," Walters wrote. "What an incredible young soul. Please keep Cam's family in your hearts and prayers and please keep this incredible Alto community in your prayers."
Progress sports correspondent Doc Smith relayed Matthews, who was a junior, was on the kickoff-return team as the final seconds ticked down before halftime. He went into a seizure returning to the bench along the Alto sideline.
Doctors, nurses, coaches and trainers in attendance rushed to the sideline to keep Matthews breathing using CPR protocol. After a 20-minute wait for an ambulance, officials summoned a medical helicopter from Tyler, which is 50 miles north of Alto. The rural community is 11 miles from the nearest town.
Matthews remained in critical condition until he died Saturday night, according to ESPN.com. No official cause of death has been determined. Alto High School has an enrollment of almost 200 students.
Matthews is the sixth US high school football player to die this season, according to CNN.com.
