A tight competition is expected as the PGA Tour season continues with the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, beginning Thursday at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Three of the last four editions of the tournament needed a playoff to decide the winner, with Emiliano Grillo recording a birdie on the second playoff hole to defeat Adam Schenk in 2023. Scottie Scheffler lost to Sam Burns in a playoff the previous season and Daniel Berger was victorious in 2020 after Collin Morikawa missed a short putt on the first playoff hole. In 2021, Jason Kokrak finished two strokes better than Jordan Spieth to win the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Scheffler, who has won four of his last six starts, is the overwhelming +300 favorite in the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge odds. Morikawa is the second choice at +1400 and Spieth, the 2016 champion, is +1800. Max Homa is next at +2200, while Tony Finau rounds out the top five choices in the Charles Schwab Challenge 2024 field at +3300. One surprise: Nejad is fading Jordan Spieth, even though he is one of the favorites at +1800. The 2015 PGA Player of the Year has done quite well in the Charles Schwab Challenge over his career, winning the tournament in 2016 and posting three runner-up finishes - most recently in 2021. Spieth has recorded eight top-10 finishes in 11 appearances in the tournament.
But the 30-year-old native of Dallas uncharacteristically struggled in this event last year, as he failed to make the cut. He got off to a strong start this season as he finished third in the Sentry. However, things haven't gone very well for Spieth since then as he missed the cut four times, finished 29th or worse on four occasions, and was disqualified once while posting only two top-10s over his next 12 events.
Instead, Nejad is high on the chances of Collin Morikawa, who is listed at +1400. The 27-year-old Californian has yet to record a victory in 2024 but is coming off his third top-five finish of the season, as he tied for fourth place at the PGA Championship last weekend. Morikawa also performed well at the first major of the year, finishing even with Max Homa and Tommy Fleetwood for third at the Masters last month.
Ranked first on the PGA Tour this year in driving accuracy percentage (78.74%), Morikawa is the only golfer with top-five finishes in both majors and has been 23rd or better in each of his last five starts overall. He also began 2024 by tying for fifth place in The Sentry and has eight top-25s in 12 events this season. Morikawa is seeking his seventh career victory on the PGA Tour and first since finishing six strokes ahead of both Beau Hossler and Eric Cole in the Zozo Championship last October.
