The PGA Tour will hold its third of eight Signature Events this week when play begins at the 2024 Genesis Invitational beginning on Thursday at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. As a Signature Event, the 2024 Genesis Invitational will feature a limited 70-player field with top players and increased prize money. The tournament will have a player-friendly 36-hole cut: the top 50 and ties plus any player within 10 shots of the lead. This week's winner will earn $4 million.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the favorite in the 2024 Genesis Invitational odds at +650. Rory McIlroy (+1000), Viktor Hovland (+1400), Xander Schauffele (+1600), Justin Thomas (+1600), and Collin Morikawa (+1600) round out the top six choices in the Genesis Invitational field. One surprise: Nejad is completely fading Hovland, even though he is one of the favorites at +1400. The 26-year-old Norwegian will be playing in his 101st PGA Tour event. He has six career wins, 20 top-five finishes, and $26.9 million in career earnings already.
But Hovland pulled out of last week's WM Phoenix Open because he wasn't happy with his game. He finished 22nd at The Sentry to open the 2024 season and 58th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in his only two starts this year. "He hasn't been impressive so far this season, and I'm simply unwilling to speculate upon him at +1400," Nejad told SportsLine.
However, Nejad sees stuff to like about former Masters champion and world No. 1 Adam Scott, even though he has not won a PGA Tour event in four years. The 43-year-old is set to make his third PGA Tour start of the year after tying for eighth in the WM Phoenix Open last week. Last month, he earned a top-10 finish in Dubai.
Scott will be playing this week on a sponsor's exemption, which he received after writing to the tournament director. Scott badly wanted to play at Riviera, which is his favorite course on tour and is a place where he has won twice. "He was great last week in Phoenix and comes to Riviera with great course history: top 10s in three of his last five appearances, with one of those being an outright win in 2020," Nejad said.
