One of the oldest PGA Tour events takes place this week when 156 players tee off in the 2024 Valero Texas Open beginning on Thursday at TPC San Antonio. The Texas Open was first played in 1922. Only the U.S. Open (1895), Western Open (1899), Canadian Open (1904) and PGA Championship (1916) are older among current PGA Tour events in North America. This week, world No. 2 Rory McIlroy is the +900 favorite in the 2024 Valero Texas Open odds. He is making his first start since finishing 19th at The Players Championship three weeks ago.
Ludvig Aberg is the +1200 second choice in the Valero Texas Open 2024 field. Jordan Spieth (+2000), Hideki Matsuyama (+2000) and Max Homa (+2200) round out the top five choices. So far this season, McIlroy ranks 94th on tour in strokes gained: putting (-0.036). "While I think he's a solid course fit and an elite player, his price is too short," Nejad told SportsLine.
However, Nejad is high on the chances of Byeong Hun An, who is listed at +3500. The 32-year-old from South Korea has two top-five and three top-10 finishes this season. He enters the week seventh in the FedEx Cup standings.
Nejad likes that An has excelled from tee-to-green this season. He ranks 13th on the PGA Tour in driving distance (308.1 yards) and 14th in greens in regulation percentage (71.26%).
