The PGA Tour on Tuesday released its 2021-22 schedule, replete with 48 total events as well as new details about "Strategic Alliance," the agreement the PGA Tour announced last fall with the European Tour in which the two Tours were expected to collaborate. The collaboration will begin in 2022 with three tournaments that will be co-sanctioned and count on both the PGA Tour's FedExCup and the European Tour's Race to Dubai: the Barbasol Championship, the Barracuda Championship and the Genesis Scottish Open, all of which are set to take place next July.
"With today's news, I am pleased to say that the PGA TOUR and the European Tour are both stronger than at any time in our history, as we are positioned to grow – together – over the next 10 years faster than we have at any point in our existence," PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. "We are committed to continuing to evolve and adapt, and with our ever-strengthening partnership with the European Tour, to take the global game to the heights we all know it is capable of."
Of the 48 total events on the schedule, 45 will take place during the FedExCup regular season and three will be FedExCup Playoff events. Those three will be the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn., the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Del., and the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. It marks the first time Memphis and TPC Southwind will host a FedExCup Playoff event instead of a WGC event, and it will serve as the first stop of the three-event playoffs.
Here's a look at the complete 2021-22 PGA Tour schedule, and below are a few more takeaways on next season's slate.
1. Memphis rewarded with a huge event
Memphis has served as a regular season stop on the PGA Tour since 1958, and its WGC event is now moving to a playoff event sponsored by FedEx, whose headquarters are located in Memphis. The event, which will be named the FedEx St. Jude Championship, will be held Aug. 11-14 and sandwiched behind the Wyndham Championship and in front of the BMW Championship.
"Thanks to the continued support from FedEx as the TOUR's umbrella partner, we're proud to bring the start of the FedExCup to Memphis and a course loved by our players," said Monahan. "Not only will it be a great test worthy of Playoff golf, but we also anticipate tremendous enthusiasm from a community that has steadfastly supported the PGA TOUR for more than 60 years. And, of course, the important work of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will continue to be front and center."
2. Amazing finish to the regular season
You'd be wise to start requesting vacation time now for next July's slate. It features the Scottish Open -- normally a European Tour event but now co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour for the first time -- to start the month, held opposite the Barbasol Championship. The following week is the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews in Scotland before a pair of stateside events (3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic) ahead of August's FedExCup playoff run.
3. No playoff events in Boston or New York area
Since 2007, The Northern Trust has served as the first leg of the FedExCup playoffs, rotating annually between Boston, Mass. and Jersey City, N.J. However, Memphis' call-up to host the FedEx St. Jude Championship as one of the three playoff events is replacing the Northern Trust on the playoff rotation. That leaves just one event -- albeit a big one -- on the schedule next year that will be in either the Boston or New York area: the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., scheduled for June 16-19, 2022.
