Cameron Young claims 2026 Players Championship in come-from-behind effort for second PGA Tour victory

Cameron Young picked up the biggest win of his career in thrilling fashion on Sunday, as he took advantage of an implosion from Ludvig Åberg and out-dueled Matt Fitzpatrick with a final round 68 to capture the 2026 Players Championship.

Young, who fell out of the final pairing after making double bogey on the 18th on Saturday, got redemption on the closing stretch at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday. Trailing Fitzpatrick by one as they arrived at the 17th tee, Young bested the Englishman's tee shot by taking on the perilous back right hole location, feeding his ball down the slope to set up a 10-footer for birdie that sent the masses around the island green into a frenzy.

On the equally intimidating 18th tee, holding a share of the lead at 13 under, Young was able to wipe away the visual of his water ball on Saturday and piped a 375-yard drive that carried all of the danger and set him up with a wedge from 98 yards out.

After watching Young's majestic drive, Fitzpatrick finally blinked for seemingly the first time all day, flaring his tee shot right into the trees. That forced him to pitch out to just short of the green, and set the stage for Young to throw a wedge to the back edge of the green to leave a 15-foot putt back into the wind to win the tournament.

Young slid that putt by on the right side, but Fitzpatrick couldn't force a three-hole playoff -- likely to be played on Monday due to a storm on the horizon -- when he missed an 8-footer for par to give Young the biggest win of his young career.

After breaking through for his first PGA Tour win at the 2025 Wyndham Championship, Young carried his strong play into 2026 with a pair of top-10 finishes coming into this week. For a player whose career had been defined for years by close calls and falling just short with seven runner-up finishes, Sunday at The Players was a crowning achievement and an official stamp of Young's place among the game's top players.

Leaderboard breakdown

1. Cameron Young (-13): Young didn't have a share of the lead on Sunday until his birdie on No. 17, which meant that first jolt of nerves hit him on the 18th tee box at TPC Sawgrass, one of the most intimidating places on the PGA Tour. All he did was step up and pump a 375-yard bomb, happily riding an ever-increasing wind at his back to a divot-free zone on the right side of the fairway. His approach with a wedge, with a 22 mph wind at his back, was similarly impressive and probably deserved better than releasing to the back edge of the green, and while he couldn't pull off the win in the kind of style you dream of by pouring in the putt, Fitzpatrick helped him out by failing to scramble for par. Now Young has his second win and one of the most prized trophies in all of golf to seriously bolster his credentials as one of the game's elite. Oh, and a $4.5 million paycheck coming his way.

2. Matt Fitzpatrick (-12): Fitzpatrick looked like the man most likely to reel in Åberg all day and barely placed a foot wrong until the very end of the tournament. He'll rue two tee shots in particular. The first was a hooky miss off the 16th tee that put him in the trees and kept him from making a needed birdie on the par 5 to create some cushion. The second was the understandable blocky cut off the 18th -- especially with that pull on No. 16 fresh in his mind -- that kept him from having a chance to get to the back pin. Still, he continues to play extremely well in 2026 and if he keeps up this level of play, you'd expect him to take home a big trophy or two this season.

3. Xander Schauffele (-11): A late surge from Schauffele put him in the mix as he posted the clubhouse lead as the penultimate group arrived at No. 17, where there were no guarantees they wouldn't come back to him. Still, he just didn't produce enough on the weekend to capture the win that would truly signify he was fully back and will feel like this was an opportunity that slipped away given how Åberg came back to the field.

4. Robert MacIntyre (-10): MacIntyre got hot in the middle of his round and had it to 11 under with seven holes to play, and if he'd executed better down the stretch it could've been him capturing his biggest career win. Instead, he had two stumbles on Nos. 14 and 16, punctuated by a chip into the water on the par 5 that ended his Players dreams.

T5. Ludvig Åberg, Jacob Bridgeman, Sudarshan Yellamaraju (-9): It was another solid week for Bridgeman as he continues to prove his bonafides as a strong PGA Tour player in big events and a huge week for Sudarshan Yellamaraju in his rookie year, but we're going to focus on Åberg.

Holding a three-shot lead coming into the day, he handled the front nine nicely, even though he wasn't able to ever extend his lead beyond three shots. The putter wasn't doing him any favors, as his longest made putt of the day was just under 5 feet, but it was his refusal to part with his aggression on a course ready to punish the overly ambitious that cost him. A huge block with a fairway wood on the par-5 11th saw him lose his two-shot lead immediately with a bogey and a Fitzpatrick birdie ahead. Then, on the short par-4 12th, rather than trying to settle himself down, he pulled driver and tried to reach the green on the hole playing 372 yards and hit a snap hook into the water.

That was the decision he'll be asked about over and over, and while he may defend staying aggressive, there's a difference between aggression and poor planning. Rory McIlroy, who had nothing to lose, was the only player to find that green all day and leave a decent look at eagle -- which he missed from 10 feet. Åberg wasn't in a position where he needed to force anything after just making a bogey on the 11th, but he couldn't resist the allure of trying to chase getting that shot back immediately and fell straight into Pete Dye's trap at TPC Sawgrass.

There's no doubt that Åberg has the game to win big tournaments -- and win a lot of them. The question for him is whether he can learn how to play with that conservative aggression so many of the top pros talk about, rather than the reckless abandon he sometimes shows. He's now 1-for-4 in converting 54-hole leads into victories, and there's got to be some scar tissue building up.

Somewhat ironically, if he's looking for someone that can show what it looks like when it does click for a young, talented player who hasn't been able to close, it's the man who passed him for the win on Sunday.

Advantage Young on No. 18

Cameron Young steps up to the plate on No. 18 and pipes one 375 yards to the middle of the fairway. Meanwhile, Matt Fitzpatrick runs through the right side and is in the pine needles. The crowd and the momentum are behind the American.

Cam Young birdies the 17th to tie the lead

We got some early onions from Cam Young on the Island Green, as he took on a bit more danger than Fitzpatrick to throw his tee shot deeper into the green and a bit further right to catch the slope and set up a birdie putt to tie the lead.

He poured that in after Fitz slid his lengthy birdie putt by, and now they stride to the 18th tee tied at the top at 13 under, two clear of Xander Schauffele in the clubhouse.

Fitzpatrick saves par from the straw on No. 16, now stares down the Island Green

The penultimate group has become the defacto final group thanks to the struggles behind them, and Fitzpatrick clings to a one-shot lead over Cam Young as they prepare to play the iconic 17th. The wind is blowing straight downwind, adding to the challenge of holding the green if you fly it to the back, and they're both trying to figure out how to hit dry land and stay ahead of Xander.

Xander Schauffele posts new clubhouse lead at 11 under

After looking out of sorts for most of his front nine, Xander Schauffele birdies three out of his last four holes to post 11 under — a new clubhouse lead. Schauffele's final birdie came on the difficult par-4 18th that is playing straight down wind. He took 4 iron off the tee and ripped an approach to 20 feet under the hole before curling in his birdie effort. Both Matt Fitzpatrick (-13) and Cameron Young (-12) face 45 feet for birdie on No. 16.

Fitzpatrick takes one-stroke lead into final three holes

Matt Fitzpatrick bounces back from his 3 putt on No. 14 with a birdie on No. 15. After lacing his drive, Fitzpatrick finessed a wedge to 12 feet and connected for what is his sixth birdie of the afternoon. The Englishman leads by one over his playing partner Cameron Young who missed his birdie bid from roughly 15 feet before him.

Matt Fitzpatrick bogeys the 14th, tied with Young at -12

Matt Fitzpatrick finally took a step back with a bogey on the tough 14th, as he jammed his par putt by on the left side of the hole. In the same group, Cam Young made a solid par putt to stay at 12 under and he is now tied at the top with Fitzpatrick after Åberg's implosion in the final group. Ludvig needs to take a deep breath and recognize he's still in the mix, because there's still a lot of golf to be played and no one seems real comfortable.

That's best evidenced by Bobby Mac chipping into the water on the 16th as he'll drop off his spot at 11 under, and it's become a real nervy finish at TPC Sawgrass for a bunch of players looking for a massive victory.

Matt Fitzpatrick takes the solo lead

The Englishman is the most comfortable man on the golf course as he adds his fifth birdie of the afternoon on the par-3 13th. He gets to 13 under and one clear of his playing partner Cameron Young who also made birdie on No. 13. Meanwhile, Ludvig Aberg hits another ball in the water — this one off the tee on the short par-4 12th — as he cards his second straight 6 and walks off the green three off the lead.

We've got a tied ballgame!

Ludvig Aberg hits his second shot into the par-5 11th in the dead center of the pond protecting the green and ultimately cards an untimely bogey. He drops to 12 under alongside Matt Fitzpatrick who threw a dart into the par-4 12th to tie his European Ryder Cup teammate. The Englishman had great chances on Nos. 9-11 but was unable to convert any before No. 12. Let's see how he reacts once he sees his name is atop the leaderboard.

Cameron Young joins the party at 11 under

The chase pack is stacking up behind Ludvig Åberg, but we're still waiting for someone to make a real move on the leader. Young got off to a rocky front nine, but has started to make a positive move in the middle of his round, making birdie on the 10th to reach 11 under, tied with Fitzpatrick and MacIntyre for second. It's going to take a flurry to the finish for one of those players to chase down Åberg, who is playing solid, but not spectacular golf so far in his final round. He's left the door open after his front nine, but no one has yet been willing to run through it.

Åberg makes the turn with a two-stroke lead

Åberg's opening nine saw him produce one birdie, one bogey and seven pars as he makes the turn at 13 under and two clear of the field. Bobby MacIntyre has reached 11 under with three birdies in his last four holes and Matt Fitzpatrick is at that same number in the penultimate grouping. Sepp Straka is surging up ahead at 10 under through 12 holes thanks to birdies on Nos. 9-11.

MacIntyre moves one closer with a birdie on No. 11

Bobby Mac is now tied with Matthew Fitzpatrick for second at 11 under, two behind Ludvig Åberg after taking advantage of the two par 5s in the middle of TPC Sawgrass. MacIntyre got up-and-down from short of the green on No. 11 for a birdie to move within two shots of Åberg, who is making his way through the par-5 9th right now. How Ludvig handles the stretch of 9-10-11 and the two par 5 opportunities may dictate whether MacIntyre and Fitzpatrick -- and any other chasers -- have a real shot at the win.

Bobby MacIntyre birdies No. 9 to get within three

He has been the best player so far this weekend and he is now within three of Ludvig Aberg. Bobby Mac is 10 under in his last 27 holes and 10 under for the championship. He put four more birdies on his card across his front nine including back-to-back circles on Nos. 8-9.

Michael Thorbjornsen makes quadruple-bogey 8 on No. 4

Well, the Players Championship debutant just got got on the par-4 4th. Michael Thorbjornsen makes a quadruple bogey 8 on the devilish short hole which marks the highest score on the hole this week. Thorbjornsen missed the fairway left, laid up short of the water and then hit his third into the water. His fifth from the drop zone settled 10 feet above the hole before Thorbjornsen 3 putted from there. He drops to 7 under and six behind Ludvig Aberg who made bogey himself on No. 4. His lead is down to two strokes over Matt Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick goes -3 thru 4 to get into T2

Matt Fitzpatrick appears to be the man who will make the early charge from behind Ludvig Åberg, as he picked up his third birdie in the first four holes on the short 4th to reach 11 under and a share of second. Fitzpatrick appears dialed in tee-to-green to start his final round, but still has plenty of work to do to catch Åberg at 14 under -- who also appears to still be in a great rhythm.
