Scottie Scheffler wins second FedEx Cup in three years, inching closer to Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy

Scottie Scheffler still has a birdie putt to come on the 18th, but barring an albatross from Hovland on the closing hole, this is going to be a second Tour Championship and FedEx Cup victory for Scottie Scheffler. Hovland had a wedge in hand from the fairway and bladed it over the green, as his miserable Sunday stroll around East Lake ends with a thud. He'll simply be trying to avoid falling out of solo second on the 18th, with Ryan Gerard just one behind him. 

Back-to-back birdie putts from Viktor Hovland hit the left edge and bounce out, and he will now may need a birdie-eagle finish to force a playoff depending on what Scottie Scheffler does on the par-5 18th. It's been that kind of day for Hovland, who led the field in putting the first three days but has not been able to produce the same kind of magic on the greens. The putter cooling off coupled with some wild swings off the tee has caused him to stall out on Sunday, and now this is Scottie Scheffler's tournament to lose with one hole left in his final round. 

After one of the best tee shots all day on the long par 3, Viktor Hovland bounced his birdie putt off the left edge and had it skip past in his attempt to keep pace with Scottie Scheffler. Hovland is now running out of holes to get his second FedEx Cup title, and will need to match Scheffler with a birdie on the 16th at minimum if he's going to have a chance down the stretch. 

Scheffler now has a two-shot lead after finding the dead center of the cup with a left-to-right swinger on the 16th for birdie to get to 16 under. He'll have at least one more good birdie opportunity left with the par-5 18th and seems like he'll force Viktor Hovland to do something special to prevent him from hoisting the FedEx Cup trophy for the second time. 

Bogeys on No. 14 from Scheffler and No. 13 from Hovland has dropped the lead back to 15 under, but the world No. 1 remains on top. Scheffler couldn't save par after missing the fairway on the 14th, while Hovland had a harsh lip out after finding the greenside bunker from the rough on the 13th.

Hovland is back to 14 under, now just one ahead of Chris Gotterup, and if anyone can mount a charge to the clubhouse and post a number, they're going to have an opportunity given how challenging East Lake is playing today. 

Hovland led the field in fairways hit through two rounds and was T3 after Saturday's third round, but he is spraying it off the tee today. Hovland is just 5-of-10 in fairways hit in his final round which has made it extremely difficult on him to create the same number of birdie opportunities -- particularly with a tougher set of pin positions on Sunday. That's the big reason he's just 1 under today, and he'll need to figure out how to quit hanging the ball right off the tee down the stretch if he's going to pass Scottie Scheffler for the Tour Championship win. 

For the first time all day, Scottie Scheffler's name is atop the leaderboard by itself. Ever since the seventh hole, Scheffler's wedge play has been flawless as he gave himself a look from 5 feet on the par-4 13th and cashes in once again. He moves to 16 under, one clear of Viktor Hovland, with his fifth birdie of this final round.

Gotterup is trying to stay attached to Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland to prevent those two from completely breaking away. After a wayward tee shot on the 12th, Gotterup muscled a wedge to just over the green but avoided going down into the bunker and drew a good lie that allowed him to chip in for birdie and get to 13 under, two shots back of the leaders. 

Gotterup and Adam Scott are tied for third at that number and will try to reel in the leaders -- or hope the top two stumble a touch down the stretch. 

Hovland and Scheffler are now three shots clear of the four-way tie for third at 12 under, and with how challenging East Lake is playing today, it's going to take something special from that group to make this anything more than another duel between Viktor and Scottie. Back at the Travelers, Hovland bested Scheffler for that signature event title in a playoff, and Scottie will have revenge on his mind on the back nine -- as well as a second FedEx Cup title. No one else has threatened to make a move on Sunday, and they're running out of time to mount a charge. 

He isn't going to let Viktor Hovland get out in front that easily. Scottie Scheffler puts his hands to use on the par-4 10th as he manipulates the club face at the bottom of his swing arc to manufacture a beautiful wedge shot that settles 8 feet from the pin. Just as he did two holes ago, Scheffler pays it off to get to 3 under for the day and 15 under for the championship alongside Hovland. The two are three clear of the field.

The final duo finally puts a circle on the scorecard between the two with the birdie belonging to Viktor Hovland. The overnight leader cashes in a 3-foot birdie on the short par-4 8th after a sensational approach to access the front right pin location. That pushes the lead out to 15 under by himself and one clear of Scottie Scheffler. He is three strokes clear of a quartet at 12 under that includes his playing partner Ryan Gerard.

After a horrible wedge shot on No. 7, Scottie Scheffler sizzles one to 8 feet on No. 8. He kicks that one in for birdie to return to 2 under for the day, 14 under for the tournament and atop the leaderboard alongside Viktor Hovland. 

Scheffler's 2-under total is the second-lowest number on the golf course showing just how difficult East Lake is playing at the moment. He's the only player inside the top five who is in red figures in this final round.

A stretch of 25 straight holes without a bogey has come to an end for Scottie Scheffler. With a wedge in hand from the middle of the fairway on No. 7, Scottie Scheffler pulls his approach and short sides himself. He put his third to 40 feet and two putted from there for his 5. 

That is Scheffler's second straight 5 as he made only par on the par-5 6th from the middle of the fairway. At 13 under, he is one behind Viktor Hovland currently, but if he is to fall short, look back at these two holes.

Take a bow, Justin Rose! That is one way to make the turn in even par as Justin Rose DUNKS a 6 iron on the difficult par-3 9th for his fourth career hole-in-one on the PGA Tour. That is the first hole-in-one on No. 9 at the Tour Championship since Xander Schauffele made one in the third round of the 2019 championship.

After playing extremely easy the first three days, East Lake is suddenly giving 29 of the best players in the world fits. There are currently 13 players in the field over par in the final round and just nine who are under par -- with 2 under as the best round on the course. Things are firming up, the rough is nasty, tees are pushed back and the pins are tucked. It'll be a grind all afternoon for the leaders, and whoever lifts the FedEx Cup trophy later this evening will have earned that the hard way. 

All he needed was me to talk about how he can't make anything and he finally pours in a long one for birdie on the 4th hole after finding the fairway bunker off the tee. That gets Scheffler to 14 under and ties Hovland for the lead, and we've got some real action out at East Lake early in this final round. 

That 23'11" putt was his longest make of the week, and if he can find anything on the greens it's going to present real problems for the rest of the field.
