Andy Pettitte, the Yankees' 39-year-old lefty who recently ended his retirement, returned to game action on Wednesday. Pettitte took the mound for an inning of relief against the Mets, and the results were encouraging: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.
Pettitte yielded a full-count single to Cory Vaughn, who was eventually caught stealing. Pettitte then retired Scott Hairston on a pop-up to short and Mike Nickeas on a ground-out to second.
Pettitte will remain in Tampa and work toward a 100-pitch workload, MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reports. He's on target to join the active roster in early May.
While it's obviously foolish to draw any conclusions from a single spring inning, today marks Pettitte's first game action since Game 3 of the 2010 ALCS. It's also encouraging that he was able to induce weak contact and work a scoreless frame mere days after complaining of leg fatigue.
