The Blue Jays acquired closer Sergio Santos during the 2011 winter meetings in hopes of shoring up a bullpen that had a penchant for blown saves.
Things haven't exactly gone as planned.
In just six appearances, Santos blew two of his four saves chances and posted a 9.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP. And that's how his line will look at the end of the season, too, because multiple reports from around the Blue Jays (including MLB.com's Jays' beat writer Gregor Chisholm) say Santos will have season-ending surgery on his shoulder.
Chisholm reports that Santos' surgery "will center around his labrum." Santos tried to rehab the injury instead of having surgery, but the pain reportedly never went away. Oh, and this is for the conspiracy theorists:
Since everyone will ask, Farrell reiterated #BlueJays did not get damaged goods in offseason deal. Said pain first surfaced in game at KC.

The Jays have been getting by with Casey Janssen at closer. He is 13 for 13 in save chances since taking over the role and sports a sparkling 2.21 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP.
This doesn't mean the Blue Jays had no use for Santos. In fact, getting him back would have been a huge help for depth purposes. The starting rotation has been ravaged by injury and relief pitcher Luis Perez is also out for the season.
