The Blue Jays could begin next season with all three of their catchers, according to the National Post’s John Lott.
Lott spoke to Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos, who envisioned a scenario where J.P. Arencibia is the regular catcher, Jeff Mathis is the backup and prospect Travis d’Arnaud is the regular designated hitter.
The team also signed Yorvit Torrealba on Tuesday, but he’s viewed as the short-term backup for Mathis while Arencibia and d’Arnaud recover from injuries.
That scenario could change if teams show an interest in Arencibia during the offseason. The 26-year-old catcher has hit .242/.279/.466 in 299 plate appearances this year.
If the Blue Jays bring back all three catchers, that could push Adam Lind out of the starting lineup. With Edwin Encarnacion enjoying a breakout season at first, Lind’s only spot would be at DH, where d’Arnaud would be slated to start. Anthopoulos stressed that once d’Arnaud is healthy, he will play regularly.
