Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks, who was recently arrested on five charges, DUI chief among them, has issued a statement through the team. It reads:
Jenks is currently on the 60-day DL after undergoing back surgery in December and has no clear timetable for his return. Since signing a two-year, $12-million contract with Boston in December of 2010, Jenks has posted a 6.32 ERA in just 15.2 innings of work.
“I am embarrassed by the situation and apologize to my teammates and to the Red Sox organization for any distractions I may have caused. I still need to let the legal process run its course and until it does, I will not be able to make any further comment.”With legal proceedings yet to come, this is about the most Jenks is permitted to say -- hence the euphemistic qualifiers like "situation" and "distractions." Jenks's arrest comes amid a rash of spring-training DUIs, including Matt Bush of the Rays and Alex White of the Rockies.
