Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton pitched well but suffered his first loss of the season in a spot start Tuesday night against the Phillies.
Cumpton (0-1) pitched five scoreless innings before allowing a run-scoring single to Ryan Howard, a sacrifice fly to Domonic Brown and a run-scoring double to Delmon Young in the sixth inning. The right-hander permitted three runs on six hits and one walks while striking out three over 5 2/3 innings in a 3-1 loss.
Cumpton has a 4.02 ERA through three starts and is expected to be sent to the minors.
