The Cardinals are now down to six core players on the disabled list, as outfielder/second baseman Skip Schumaker has been activated. He's been sidelined since May 31 with a strained right hamstring.
The 32-year-old Schumaker, who's hitting .321/.378/.432 in 90 plate appearances this season, will allow Carlos Beltran to move off center field (although the position will belong to Jon Jay once he returns from his shoulder injury), and, as part of the mix at second base, Schumaker can provide some OBP from the left side. To make room on the active roster, the Cardinals have optioned reliever Makiel Cleto back to Triple-A Memphis.
Schumaker had hit safely in eight straight games at the time of his injury.
