Despite initially being diagnosed with a torn ACL, Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman instead has a torn meniscus, GM John Mozeliak says, citing the results of a Monday MRI. B.J. Rains of FOXSports Midwest reports that Berkman will receive a second opinion later this week. If the diagnosis holds up, then Berkman will miss "merely" six to eight weeks rather than the possible season- and career-ending prospect of a torn ACL.
"If I've torn my ACL or something like that, I'd certainly get it fixed," Berkman told the Post-Dispatch when that was believed to be his injury. "But you don't know how psychologically you're going to come back from something like that. I'm not talking from the standpoint of being scared of hurting it again. I'm talking about doing everything it takes to come back and play again at an elite level. I think that's a legitimate question I'm going to have to anwer if, in fact, it turns out to be something more serious than we hope it is."
The Cardinals placed the 36-year-old Berkman on the disabled list before Sunday's game in Los Angeles and called up Matt Adams, who had two hits in his debut.
Berkman signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals and is a free agent at the end of the season.
