The Cardinals recalled first baseman Dan Johnson from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, MLB.com reports. Johnson started the year in the Reds organization, but was picked up by the Cardinals after Cincinnati released him at the end of April.

In 61 games with Memphis, Johnson was batting .265 with 11 homers and 11 doubles, with 42 RBI. With Matt Adams out with a quad injury, Johnson will handle first base with Mark Reynolds going back over to third. Matt Carpenter is expected to cover second base with Kolten Wong dealing with a concussion, according to Fox Sports Midwest.

Johnson was last with the Blue Jays, appearing in 15 games for Toronto in 2014. His last bit of sustained success came when he hit 18 home runs for the A's in 2007.

The Cardinals still need to clear space on the 40-man roster for Johnson, who is in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
