The Chicago Cubs have claimed left-handed relief pitcher Alex Hinshaw off waivers, according to team officials. Hinshaw was designated for assignment by the Padres on Aug. 14.
Hinshaw, a 15th round pick by the Giants in the 2005 draft, was 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 28 innings over 31 appearances with the Padres this season.
In order to make room for Hinshaw on the 40-man roster, the Cubs transferred pitcher Arodys Vizcaino to the 60-day disabled list. Acquired by the Cubs in a July trade, Vizcaino is recovering from Tommy John surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training next season.
