Cubs relievers Rafael Soriano and James Russell have been designated for assignment. 

Soriano made six appearances for the Cubs after signing a minor-league deal in June. He posted a 6.35 ERA, and was placed on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation on Aug. 5.

In his first season back with the Cubs, Russell struggled in 2015. In 49 relief appearances, he posted a 5.29 ERA over 34 innings of work.
