Bad news: The Diamondbacks have placed right-hander Daniel Hudson on the 15-day DL with forearm tightness that an MRI revealed to be a torn UCL. Unless a second opinion says otherwise, it means Hudson is bound for Tommy John surgery.
Good news: In a corresponding move, the Snakes have activated shortstop Stephen Drew, who's missed the entire season because of a fractured ankle he suffered last year.
Hudson, who departed his Tuesday night start against the Braves with forearm discomfort, will miss at least the next calendar year if ihe requires reconstructive elbow surgery. On the season, Hudson has a 7.35 ERA across nine starts. It's not yet certain who will be Hudson's long-term replacement in the rotation, but his loss means top prospect Trevor Bauer is more likely to stick.Bauer makes his major-league debut on Thursday.
As for Drew, his numbers were down a bit last season, but in 2010 he authored a batting line of .278/.352/.458. Arizona shortstops this season (meaning, mostly, Willie Bloomquist) have combined to hit a solid .297/.331/.440, but given the cast of characters that wasn't likely to last.
In other moves, the D-backs also recalled lefty Patrick Corbin and optioned right-hander Jonathan Albaladejo to Triple-A Reno.
