Dee Gordon will miss six weeks after undergoing surgery on his thumb, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reported. Gordon dislocated his thumb in Wednesday's game against Cincinnati, but further examination revealed a UCL tear in the thumb, Hernandez reported.
As is, the Dodgers are very shallow at shortstop. Jerry Hairston and Elian Herrera are listed on the club's official depth chart but shortstop is at best either player's third-best position. Luis Cruz, a recent call up, could be the short term answer, but he owns a mediocre .280/.310/.441 line at Triple-A and has a .560 OPS in 491 major league plate appearances.
The injury could create another buyer in the shortstop trade market. There isn't much available this season, but we could see the Dodgers make a play for Jed Lowrie or Marco Scutaro, among others.
With the roster spot created by Gordon's injury, the Dodgers activated Javy Guerra off the disabled list. The former closer went on the disabled list June 4th with a knee injury. Guerra will likely set up current closer Kenley Jansen.
