CBSSports.com Insider Danny Knobler tweets that Dustin Pedroia and the Red Sox have agreed that he'll attempt to play through a torn thumb muscle but that a trip to the DL "remains possible, maybe even probable." Knobler also reports that Pedroia has been told that surgery won't be necessary.
If Pedroia does eventually need to be deactivated, then he could miss up to a month.
On the season, Pedroia is hitting .295/.350/.450 in addition to providing Gold Glove-caliber defense at the keystone. Needless to say, his loss would be a critical one. While Nick Punto, Pedroia's likely replacement, is skilled with the glove, he can't come close to matching Pedroia's productivity at the plate.
Should a roster move prove necessary, then Pedroia would become the 13th Boston player currently on the disabled list.
