Giants" data-canon="San Francisco Giants" data-type="SPORTS_OBJECT_TEAM" id="shortcode0">' ace Matt Cain has thrown the 22nd perfect game in major-league history and first in franchise history.
Cain went the distance against the Astros in AT&T Park on Wednesday night and, by definition, didn't allow a single base-runner. Cain also tied Sandy Koufax's 1965 record for most strikeouts in a perfect game with 14.
Cain's perfecto comes on the heels of Philip Humber's April 21 perfect game against the Mariners. That makes the 2012 season just the second (joining 2010) to see two perfect games. It's also the fifth no-hitter of the season.
Cain endured his closest call in the seventh, but, lucky for him, right fielder Gregor Blanco was on the case ...
Of Cain's 125 pitches, 86 went for strikes. By not allowing anyone to reach base and whiffing 14, Cain was able to record a game score of 101. For some perspective, the highest nine-inning game score ever recorded is 105 by Kerry Wood in 1998 against ... the Astros.
You'll recall that back in April Cain narrowly missed tossing a perfect game against the Pirates. The only hit was courtesy of the opposing pitcher, James McDonald.
Cain's history-making effort on Wednesday night lowered his 2012 ERA to 2.18.
