It seems that Johnny Damon's quixotic pursuit of 3,000 hits must carry on elsewhere, as the Indians have designated the veteran outfielder for assignment. In doing so, they now have 10 day to trade or release Damon or return him to the 40-man roster (the latter, of course, is highly unlikely).
In 64 games with Cleveland, Damon managed a slash line of .222/.281/.329 with just four home runs. If this is indeed the end for the 38-year-old Damon, then he'll retire with 2,769 career hits.
To take Damon's spot on the roster, the Tribe has called up outfielder Ezequiel Carrera from Triple-A Columbus. The 25-year-old Carrera is hitting .294/.345/.419 on the season with 26 stolen bases.
While Damon's career in Cleveland is certainly somewhat forgettable, he was, for at least one fugitive moment, thief of a certain heart in the Progressive Field stands ...
