The Indians used right-hander Carlos Carrasco in relief of scuffling starter Josh Tomlin on Tuesday night against Cincinnati. The former could replace the latter in the rotation going forward, beginning Sunday against the host Yankees.
Tomlin has been a mess since tossing a complete-game one-hitter in Seattle. He has yielded 21 earned runs on 39 hits, including seven home runs, in 26 2/3 innings. His ERA has soared from 3.78 to 4.75 during that stretch.
Carrasco struggled worse than Tomlin as a starter, but the Indians could be forced based on the lack of an alternative to return him to a starting role. He has thrived out of the bullpen, yielding 11 runs in 42 1/3 innings.
