Gomez, 24, was having a good season through the middle of May before falling apart. In his last six starts, Gomez is 1-5 with a 7.92 ERA. Before that, he was 3-2 with a 3.19 ERA in eight starts.
Barnes, 24, sports a 3.73 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 31 1/3 minor-league innings this season.
The Indians don't have an off-day until the All-Star break, so they'll certainly need a fifth starter. They haven't named one just yet, but MLB.com reports the "expectation" is that Zach McAllister will be called up before Thursday (Gomez's rotation spot) to take over.
McAllister, a 24-year-old right hander, has made four starts for the Indians this season. He's 1-1 with a 3.96 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 22 strikeouts in 25 innings.
