Dodgers second baseman Jerry Hairston Jr. called for Major League Baseball to suspend Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt after a takeout slide in Wednesday's game in Los Angeles.
"What Goldschmidt did was unacceptable," Hairston said, according to MLB.com. "I looked at the video. It was atrocious. If Major League Baseball doesn't suspend him, it's unbelievable."
Here's the play from the eighth inning of the Diamondbacks' victory:
Said Goldschmidt (from MLB.com): "My thinking is Justin [Upton] hit that ground ball and they could possibly turn a double play, [so] go int here and break it up. Obviously you're not trying to hurt anyone, but you're in there trying to make it so he can't get the throw off. Hopefully he's all right."
Hairston called the play dirty -- "He hasn't been around the game long enough," Hairston said (via MLB.com). "He's got to know better than that. He could have broken my leg."
Goldschmidt was 7 for 12 with two home runs in the series and was hit in the fifth inning. According to MLB.com, several Dodgers believed Goldschmidt was trying to retaliate.
