Rays relief pitcher Joel Peralta was going to enter Tuesday night's game against the Nationals in the eighth inning. Instead, he never got to throw a pitch.
It turns out there was a "foreign substance" on Peralta's glove and he was ejected immediately. As one can see from the picture above, his glove was confiscated by the umpiring crew for further investigation.
From tampabay.com: "Crew chief Tim Tschida said there was a 'significant amount' of pine tar on Peralta's glove and confirmed that Washington manager Davey Johnson asked him to check it. Peralta pitched for the Nationals in 2010."
Peralta will likely face a suspension, too. From Rule 8 of the MLB official rulebook, a pitcher "shall not ... apply a foreign substance of any kind to the ball." The penalty is immediate ejection and an "automatic" 10-game suspension.
