Saturday night in San Diego, Padres right-hander Paul Clemens had a little unintentional pine tar mishap on throwback jersey night. He got some pine tar on his jersey during an at-bat, and because pitchers can't have pine tar on their uniform, he had to change.
The problem? It was throwback jersey night, and there wasn't an extra Paul Clemens jersey to wear. Clemens instead had to pitch the rest of the game wearing a generic PLAYER 91 jersey. Check it out:
Well, that's no good. I've seen minor-leaguers listed as UNKNOWN on the scoreboard in spring training, and heck, I've even seen Rajai Davis wear Gene Lamont's jersey for a game, but a generic PLAYER 91 jersey? During the regular season? That's a first.
Clemens' teammates of course had a good time with it in the dugout:
The lesson here: Don't get pine tar on your fancy throwback jersey, Paul.
