During Monday night's Mets-Phillies game, Mets catcher Josh Thole was involved in a pretty scary collision at home plate with the rather solidly built Ty Wigginton.
A reverse angle showed that Thole appeared to take a shoulder to the jaw area. Thole, to his credit, managed to cling to the ball and tag Wigginton out, but he promptly collapsed to the ground in substantial pain. After a few moments, he was able to walk off the field with some assistance. (It should be noted that the Philadelphia crowd applauded warmly when Thole departed, and it should also be noted that Wigginton's slide appeared clean.)
As for Thole's health, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York tweets that Thole likely has a concussion. In turn, as Andy McCullough of the Newark Star-Ledger relays via Twitter, he's probably bound for the seven-day disabled list. Thole previously suffered a concussion as a minor-leaguer, so caution is certainly in order.
On the season, Thole is hitting .284/.356/.370, which is good production by catcher standards.
