Notes from Monday morning:

  • The White Sox could get Gavin Floyd back in the rotation as soon as Wednesday after a problem-free bullpen session Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reported. Floyd has been out since Aug. 26 with a sore elbow. Floyd has had a tough 2012; beyond the injuries, both his 4.55 ERA and 2.13 K/BB are his worst marks of the past four seasons.
  • The Phillies have recalled first baseman Darin Ruf from Double-A Reading, Philly.com reported. Ruf hit 38 home runs for Reading, including 20 in the month of August alone. Ruf finished the season with a 1.028 OPS, giving him one of the best seasons in professional baseball this year, no matter the level. At 26 years old, however, Ruf was playing against competition typically three years younger, some even more. The Phillies moved Michael Stutes to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for Ruf.
  • The Reds are taking it easy with shortstop Zack Cozart's strained oblique, MLB.com reported. The club wants to be careful not to rush Cozart back from the injury after fellow Red Drew Stubbs missed 20 days with a similar injury earlier this season. Wilson Valdez and prospect Didi Gregorious have split the shortstop duty over the past five days.
