White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko left Friday's game at Wrigley Field after being hit in the face in the third inning by a pitch from Jeff Samardzija.
Konerko, who hit a two-run homer in the first, left the game and was replaced by Dayan Viciedo, who went to left field, while Adam Dunn moved to first base.
The ball appeared to hit him on the helmet and on the left side of the face.
Samardzija immediately went towards home plate to check on Konerko. There appeared to be zero intent to hit Konerko by Samardzija, who seemed to just lose control of a split-finger fastball.
Samardzija, coincidentally, was the first batter of the bottom of the fourth inning. White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski had a long conversation with the pitcher before the inning began. The White Sox, correctly, didn't try to retaliate by throwing at Samardzija, who then reached on a throwing error by shortstop Alexei Ramirez.
In the fourth innng -- an inning after the incident -- White Sox starter Philip Humber threw behind the Cubs' Bryan LaHair and both benches were warned.
