The Pirates have reinstated Chad Qualls from the bereavement list and recalled Daniel McCutchen, the club announced Tuesday. Relievers Kyle McPherson and Justin Wilson were optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Wilson made his major league debut Monday for the Pirates, striking out three of the five batters he faced in his lone inning of work. McPherson also made his debut, throwing two scoreless innings.
The Pirates are Qualls's third team on the season and he continues to struggle -- he has allowed six runs (five earned) in his first 5.2 innings with the club, increasing his overall ERA to an ugly 5.28.
McCutchen will be making his 2012 debut for the Pirates. In three major league seasons covering 15 starts and 92 relief apperances, McCutchen has a 4.67 ERA and 5.00 FIP. He has been solid for Indianapolis, sporting a 3.05 ERA, but as a 29-year-old he should be expected to dominate the younger hitters of the minor leagues.
