Position scarcity is the name of the game in fantasy baseball. It's a simple concept with hitters -- of the 30 starting spots in the game, 12-18 of them will be drafted (in a standard 12-team mixed league), making the top three or four players at each position extremely valuable.
But it's a little different for starting pitchers. There are 150 starting pitching spots in the major leagues, of which each fantasy player needs 5-7. Although again about half of the starting pool will be drafted -- about 75 of the 150 -- the sheer numbers and variety within the pool leads to significantly more freedom when constructing a staff.
So how do you go about it? The CBSSports.com Fantasy podcast is here to guide you through the morass of starting pitchers, led by host Adam Aizer and experts Scott White and Al Melchior. They'll answer a variety of questions, such as:
- Justin Verlander or Clayton Kershaw?
- Should you chase wins?
- Is it worth worrying about pitchers with large workloads in the previous season?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of waiting to draft a starting pitcher?
- How does strategy change in an auction draft?
- Who's a sleeper? Who's a bust?
