The Rays activated designated hitter Luke Scott off the disabled list and sent infielder Sean Rodriguez to Triple-A Durham, the Tampa Tribune reported Tuesday.
With Ben Zobrist handling a shift to shortstop well, the Rays were able to sacrifice some infield depth in the form of Rodriguez, a slick-fielding shortstop but in the midst of his worst offensive season since his rookie year. Rodriguez owns just a .215/.278/.330 line on the season.
Scott has cooled off from his hot start, his batting line down to just .225/.279/.438. Still, with 12 home runs in just 262 plate appearances, Scott is a form of power the Rays offense often needs. Only the Mariners have a worse team slugging percentage than the Rays' .381 mark among AL teams.
